BACK PAIN

What Causes Back Pain?

Back pain is the most common conditions addressed by medical doctors and chiropractors. Back injuries are regularly treated by sports chiropractors. Eighty percent of people will experience back pain in their lifetime and it's the leading cause of disability in the United States. Back pain has a wide variety of causes and can be acute or chronic in nature. Back pain can be caused by a single incident or it can come on gradually over a long period of time. Some of the most common causes include:

  • SI joint dysfunction

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Disc bulge

  • Herniated disc

  • Muscle imbalance (lower cross syndrome)

  • Sprain/strain

  • Core muscle weakness

  • Poor posture

  • Lower Crossed Syndrome

  • Sciatica

  • Pinched nerve

  • Facet Syndrome

  • Central Canal Stenosis

  • Piriformis Syndrome

How Do Sports Chiropractors Treat Back Pain?

As with most conditions, the most important step in getting relief is to undergo a thorough evaluation and have the problem diagnosed correctly. Dr. Jeff Harris at Harris Chiropractic will take the time necessary to evaluate your pain and find the source. For example, low back pain can often result from a condition called "Lower Crossed Syndrome".  This condition occurs when tight hip flexors and a tight lower back combine with weak abdominals and weak gluteal muscles. This leads to excessive arching or extension of your low back, a protruding abdomen, and a flat butt due to gluteal weakness.  This dangerous combination of muscle imbalances places to much stress on the structures of the lower back, often resulting in low back pain. Once the root cause of pain is discovered, a discussion about the best way to approach the problem will occur. This usually involves a combination of different therapies to address both soft-tissue and joint problems, as well as corrective exercises. Some of the therapies sports chiropractors specialize in include:
